Ground stability and subsidence inspectionHand augering to 5 m depth to assess ground stability in relation to subsidence caused by dolines or sink-holes at the Bacton Gas Terminal, Norfolk, for Perenco UK Ltd.

Hand equipment was the only method possible due to the possibility of causing a soil collapse. Hence staff were roped during the soil survey.

Soil survey and agricultural land classification (ALC) A detailed soil survey for an agricultural land classification (ALC) in County Durham for a housing development on agricultural land, for Barrett Homes.

This survey required soil assessment of a an ancient species rich pasture site for soil replacement to more intensive agricultural land areas.

Risk assessment on site of former colliery Soil investigations were undertaken at Pen-y-Groes near Swansea for the development of a large former colliery site for housing.

Phase 1 risk assessment, exploratory survey and detailed quantitative risk assessments were undertaken to develop conceptual site models and undertake P20 groundwater modelling and human health risk assessment.

Landscape soils inspection Landscape soils investigation of the landscape scheme at the Sage Software site in Northumberland for AJT Landscape Architects.

Poor soil structural conditions had resulted in plant death, Remedial options were presented which involved the use of green waste compost.

contaminated land inspection and water analysis The pipe and stake in the foreground is to sample stream base flow for an assessment of the impacts of contamination on the River Nent below the Nent Force in the Pennines.

The work was part of a contaminated land survey on a former gasworks site for the Ayle Colliery Company Ltd.

Fly tipping contaminated land investigationIllegal landfill waste at a former car breakers site north of Newcastle.

The contaminated land investigation was for Brazenlight Ltd and included a number of testpits around the site to investigate the extent of illegal land-filling.

Landfill leachates causing metal contamination Red ocre landfill leachate onto grazing land by the A23 near Haywards Heath, Sussex.

Metal contamination in a nearby landfill was investigated to assess the extent of contamination.

Soil monitoring at a soil manufacture site Soil manufacture at the former Lambton Coke Works site near Chester-le-Street.

This is an ongoing research project for the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and includes detailed site monitoring of many soil parameters to investigate the performance of the manufactured soils.

One quarter of a million tonnes of soil were manufactured using paper mill crumb, green waste compost and collier shale under a WMX7 exemption.

More details can be found at: http://www.wrap.org.uk/composting/brownfield/lambton.html

Garden soil assessment and sampling Garden soil assessment and sampling was undertaken at a tenement site in Glasgow to investigate metal contamination in soils developed on a former industrial site.

soil sampling through concrete at chemical plant Coring through concrete for soil sampling at a chemical plant in an industrial area of Blackburn.

The site investigation was for a due diligence assessment prior to sale of the site.

Ground contamination investigation Ground contamination investigation at an old petrol station site at Brig-O-Turk in the Trossachs, Scotland for housing development.

RISC4 modelling showed the hydrocarbon contamination had naturally attenuated to the point that any contamination was below detection levels and no risk to human health was concluded.

water monitoring for contamination Former fuel station site in Leeds being investigated for contamination with a window sampling rig.

Boreholes and gas and water monitoring wells were installed for assessment of ground gas and hydrocarbon contamination of the water.

geotechnical soil surveyGeotechnical soil survey for a cable tunnel construction below the M55 motorway near Blackpool for Landmark Environmental Ltd.

The survey included the taking of U38 core samples for shear strength measurements and production of detailed borehole logs of ground conditions.

geotechnical soil surveyFor dredging of canal or pond sediment Soil Environment Services sample deep into the silt to assess plant nutrients for land spreading operations.  This is usually for agricultrual land speading under a WMX7 Waste Management Exemption which we complete on your behalf.
