Soil Thermal Resistivity (STR)
The STR for cable specifications is typically measured at 10 m
intervals from a survey point along a cable route. Additional survey
points are located as dictated by ground condition variations or
features.
Measurements are typically taken at a depth of 0.6 to 1 m using
a Decagon KD2 Thermal Properties Analyser. This is fitted with a
1200 mm length, 1.27 mm diameter probe sensor using the transient
line heat source method. Units are in meter-degrees C per watt (m
C W-1)
The probe is inserted into the soil and using a ‘slide rod’
system the probe sensor is located 60 mm into the soil. The STR
is measured over a 90 second period.
A soil moisture sample is also taken at measurement depth and gravimetric
soil moisture determined according to BS1377 in the laboratory.
